In Her Studio
What interests me more than any single work of art is the world that an artist strives to create—a world that starts with endless possibilities and is shaped through countless decisions, discoveries, and acts of observation. I look to other artists for insight into the deeply human challenges and joys of this pursuit. I am drawn to gestures—whether simple, deeply personal, or indirect—that somehow manage to say everything at once, and to forms that express extraordinary complexity within apparent simplicity.
The image of an artist surrounded by her work in the studio has become, for me, an emblem of this shared pursuit. Inspired by the self-referential space of Matisse’s The Red Studio, my series In Her Studio explores the relationship between the artist and the world she creates. Each painting balances depiction and design, portraying a particular artist while suggesting something more universal: the artist immersed in the ongoing process of inventing a world.
